Attendance at public schools for the years of compulsory education is free of charge. The compulsory school time of ten years starts with the mandatory year of kindergarten. Often, children join a voluntary year of kindergarten first. The kindergarten is followed by the primary school, which comprises six school years. At the end of primary school, on the threshold to lower secondary level, the educational path splits into different directions.
